  • MPEG-1 - The video quality of this standard is slightly worse than a VHS tape. It is used on Video-CD and CD-i type media.
  • MPEG-2 - This is a very high quality format which is often used on DVD and Digital TV.
  • MPEG Audio Layer-3 - This is used for audio compression and creates almost CD quality sound. Previous versions were MPEG Audio Layer 1 and 2.
  • MPEG-4 - A new version of previous standards, used for streaming of multimedia video and sound.
