Let the webmaster know what you think of his site

The web is all about communication. To enjoy yourself fully, you should get involved. "Talk" to people. Let people know what you think and give them your opinion. This way the web becomes more than just a spectator sport - it becomes a way to become more involved in the world around you.

One small way to get involved is to fill out guestbooks. Not every site has one, but on those that do it's often worthwhile to take a few minutes and fill one out. Especially if you really like the site. Even a quick "loved your site" is very appreciated by all webmasters. Remember, most of us are hardworking, very creative people and we love to get positive feedback, just like everyone else.

Another way to think of it is as an exchange. You got to look at something or do something for free. You got some advice or tips, you downloaded some software or you acquired a graphic. It's nice to thank the person who went to the trouble of posting it all for you.

Another great way to help out, especially if your comments are not positive, is to find a feedback form or an email link to the webmaster. Use this for sending comments directly and only to the webmaster or site maintainer.

Why the difference? Well, guestbooks are posted for everyone to see.  It's pretty rude to say a site sucks in a place which the entire world can see. On the other hand, it may be important for a webmaster to know that he's chasing away visitors by including pop-up windows or using strange plug-ins. This is appropriate in feedback directly to him or her.
