| Autocomplete is the ability of Internet Explorer to
finish a line for you before you've finished typing. It is most useful
with URLs, which can be long and confusing.
As you can see from the example below, I have only typed part of the URL (the part before the shading), yet Internet Explorer has typed the rest for me. A selection of possible matches is shown. I can use the arrow keys (or the mouse) to select one of these if I want.
URLs are read from the "history" folder. This implies if you purge your Internet Explorer history you will effectively disable autocomplete for URLs (at least until you enter some more of them). To explicitly enable or disable autocomplete (in Internet Explorer 5), select the "Internet Options..." item from the "Tools" menu. Click the "Advanced" tab and scroll down to autocomplete. Check or clear the box.
Note that this does NOT turn off the display of URLs in a scrolling region below the address line. However, it does prevent Internet Explorer from trying to complete the typing for you (which can be very annoying on a slower system). |
